The women wear grass skirts and sometimes
colored strings of bark. Pigs are central to status, wealth and
ceremonies in the Papuan highland culture. In every village pigs
mingle with the people and are eaten only on special occasions and
ceremonies.
The Dani can be easily visited by day trips from Wamena but the best
way to explore the valley is by trekking. In the beautiful valley you
will meet the friendly openhearted traditional Dani's who will welcome
you to their stone age culture. The Dani raise their pigs as members
of their family and are skillful agrarians. By building simple
irrigation they grow sweet potatoes, carrots, tobacco, taro, beans,
sugar cane and bananas.
